Gas Detector Comparison: GX3R Vs Multi-Gas Clip

Gas Detector Comparison: GX3R Vs Multi-Gas Clip

PK Safety Team |

Both the  RKI GX-3R 4 Gas Confined Space Monitor and Gas Clip Technologies Multi-Gas Clip can be used to measure oxygen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide in the field. If you need help choosing between the the two, use the following guide to select the best option for you and your team.

Gas Monitor Size

The GX-3R is known as the industry’s smallest gas monitor, measuring just 2.2 x 2.55 x 1.02 inches. The Multi-Gas Clip is slightly larger at 2.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches. Weighing 3.52 ounces, the GX-3R is also notably lighter than the MGC, which comes in at 7.7 ounces.

The GX-3R is also easy to carry around on your person. It comes with a rotating alligator clip, so the device can be mounted in any direction. Workers can use this attachment to keep the sensors close to the breathing zone. The MGC does not include this attachment.

Detection Range

Many teams depend on the GX-3R for the increased range of detection. It comes with an O2 sensor range of 0-40%, a CO sensor range of 0-2,000 ppm, and an H2S sensor range of 0-200 ppm. That’s compared to the MGC, which comes with an O2 sensor range of 0-30%, a CO2 range of 0-500 ppm, and an H2S sensor range of 0-100 ppm.

Many MGC resellers say the CO2 sensor comes with a higher rate of failure compared to the one on the GX-3R. This leads to frequent recalibration or sensor replacement. They also say the IR LEL sensor readings on the MGC tend to fluctuate in extreme cold or humid conditions. The MGC often needs to be shipped back to Texas for repairs, which can take up to 3 to 4 weeks.

The GX-3R gives you the option of adding an attachable  sample drawing pump, so you can safely sample the worksite from a distance. This can be particularly useful when working in confined spaces.

Field Serviceable

Unlike the MGC, the GX-3R is also known for being field serviceable. Workers can receive technical assistance in the field if they are having trouble using this equipment. This helps them stay on task throughout the day, instead of having to return to the office for assistance.

Warranty and Protection

The GX-3R comes with a 3-year warranty compared to the MGC’s 2-year plan. The former is also built to withstand everyday wear and tear. Tests show the device can withstand a 20-drop test, while the MGC doesn’t offer this information.

Gas Detector Value

The GX-3R is slightly cheaper than the MGC. The former lists for $595 compared to $645 for the MGC.

Many teams will invest in the calibration station to maintain their equipment. The  calibration station for the GX-3R is considerably less expensive than the one for the MGC. You can purchase the GX-3R station for just $1,300, while the MGC’s costs $1,995.

Both gas detection devices can be used in a variety of settings. If you are looking for a lightweight gas monitor with reliable readings and a wide range of detection, consider the GX-3R.
