    1947

    PK Safety founded

    PK Safety was founded by Eric L. Pedley and ship captain Josiah Knowles in San Francisco as Pedley-Knowles & Company, originally a ship chandlery business.

    Mid 1950s

    Safety Nets Innovation & Pedley Nets Formed

    Eric invented extremely durable safety nets and partnered with his nephew to form Pedley Nets in Glen Ellen, California, advancing safety net manufacturing and use in major construction projects. You can still find Pedley nets underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and in amusement parks around the country.

    1960

    New Leadership, New Markets

    The chandlery business expanded with the addition of Eric A. Pedley (Eric J. Pedley’s son) and Mel Freeman. Eric brought ship-mechanics expertise from Bethlehem Shipbuilding, while Mel contributed industry knowledge and key connections for new opportunities in the Philippine shipping market.

    1970s

    Shift to Worker Safety Equipment

    With OSHA’s formation in 1972 and changes in the original business, the company transitioned its focus primarily to worker safety products and services.

    1979

    Leadership Transition & Relocations

    Rick Pedley joined the family business in 1979 and becomes president and CEO in 1996. The company shortened its name to PK Safety and relocated to Alameda, CA (2001).

    2002

    Digital Transformation

    Launched our online store using the Yahoo platform: www.pksafety.com. This step transitioned the company from a regional seller to a nationwide audience.
2014

Service & Logistics Expansion

PK Safety became certified to service gas monitors and adopted third-party logistics systems to improve fulfillment and delivery.
2019

Launch of GRIT Flame-Resistant Workwear Line

PK Safety introduced its own UL Classified FR clothing line called GRIT — durable, breathable flame-resistant gear designed for hardworking professionals.
2020

Supporting Essential Workers Through COVID-19

During the COVID-19 shutdown, PK Safety closed its Alameda office to protect employees and comply with public health guidelines. Our Gas Detection Service & Warranty Department remained open to support essential industries, while most of our team transitioned to remote operations.
2024

RKI Instruments Honors PK Safety as #1 Distributor

PK Safety is recognized as the top-performing distributor for RKI Instruments, a significant award highlighting product expertise and vendor partnership.
