Frequently Asked Questions
How long do alkaline batteries last in the RKI 03 Series LEL monitor?
On a fresh set of alkaline batteries, the 72-0037 delivers approximately 35 continuous operating hours. The display shows a low-battery alarm when charge falls below the safe operating threshold, giving workers advance notice to swap batteries before the instrument shuts down. Always keep a spare set of batteries on site when deploying in the field.
What industries most commonly use diffusion LEL monitors like the 72-0037?
Diffusion LEL monitors are standard across refineries, petrochemical plants, water and wastewater treatment facilities, mining operations, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and utility infrastructure. Any environment where combustible hydrocarbons may accumulate — tanks, tunnels, confined spaces, or process areas — benefits from a pocket-sized clip-on LEL monitor. See the full LEL gas monitors collection for related instruments.
What data logging capabilities does the 03 Series provide?
The 72-0037 logs gas readings, alarm events, alarm trends, calibration history, and bump test records. Logging intervals are adjustable: 10-second intervals capture 5 hours; 5-minute intervals capture 150 hours; 10-minute intervals capture 300 hours. Data is retrieved via the optional USB/IrDA downloading cable (sold separately) using the included data log software.
Does PK Safety offer calibration and repair for the RKI 03 Series?
PK Safety services RKI instruments in-house with factory-trained technicians. We provide NIST-traceable calibration, sensor replacement, and repair for the RKI 03 Series portable monitors. Calibration records and service documentation are provided with each instrument. Call 800.829.9580 or visit our gas detection page to learn more about calibration services.
What does the OVER alarm signal on the 03 Series monitor indicate?
The OVER alarm activates when the detected combustible gas concentration reaches or exceeds 100% of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). At this level, the atmosphere contains enough flammable vapor to sustain combustion if an ignition source is present. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and NFPA standards require immediate evacuation when explosive concentrations are detected. The 72-0037's three-alarm progression — first, second, and OVER — gives workers graduated warning before conditions become critical.
Can the alarm setpoints be adjusted on the 03 Series LEL monitor?
Yes. Both the first alarm (default: 10% LEL) and second alarm (default: 50% LEL) setpoints are user-adjustable to match your site safety program. Adjustments are made via the 04 Series Setup Program using the optional downloading cable. STEL and TWA alarm setpoints are also configurable. Contact PK Safety at 800.829.9580 if you need guidance on appropriate setpoints for your application.
