What Respirator Filter Class Is Needed for Sanding Dust?

There is an old saying when in comes to safety that "the best mask is one you'll wear". And we agree. However, if there are a couple of masks comfortable enough to keep on while you work, then you've got some choices to make.

For light softwood sanding (pine, spruce, fir), some folks recommend the old standard 3M 8210 particulate respirator. It's an N95 which means it filters out 95% of non-oil particulate matter, is cost-effective, and comes in a box of 20. Note that N95 is NOT sufficient for hardwood dust (oak, beech, mahogany — IARC Group 1 carcinogen for nasal adenocarcinoma) or for drywall joint compound (often contains crystalline silica, regulated under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1053 at a 50 µg/m³ PEL). For those hazards, step up to a P100 filter on a reusable elastomeric respirator.

If you plan on doing lots of sanding, or are releasing more toxic or harmful particles (fiberglass, Bondo, varnish, paint - pretty much anything other than bare wood) you will want to create a better seal around your face. We like the 3M 7500 series for any work that is going to take you more than an hour or so.

The soft silicon face piece is inert and won't cause allergic reactions. It is also softer and more flexible than other masks making it ideal for jobs requiring you to wear it for long periods.

If you pair the 7500 series mask with the 3M 2091 P100 Particulate Filter you have a comfortable mask that filters 99.97% of airborne particles (the NIOSH P100 standard, per 42 CFR 84). This setup is appropriate for hardwood, MDF, drywall joint compound, and silica-containing masonry dust. For sanding lead-based paint, upgrade to a P100 filter as 3M and MSA both recommend (EPA's RRP rule minimum is N-100, but oil-based paint aerosols degrade N-series filters, so P-100 is the manufacturer-preferred setup for that hazard).

Important — asbestos-containing materials are a different situation entirely. OSHA's asbestos standards (29 CFR 1910.1001 for general industry, 29 CFR 1926.1101 for construction) prohibit sanding asbestos-containing materials at all — abatement is required, not respirator upgrade. What respirator do I need for sanding lead-based paint?

EPA's RRP Rule sets N-100 as the minimum respirator requirement for lead-paint work. However, 3M and MSA both recommend upgrading to a P-100 filter because oil-based lead paint releases aerosolized paint particles that degrade N-series filters — P-series filters are oil-resistant and hold up better. Use a P100 filter on a reusable elastomeric respirator (like the 3M 7500 half-mask). Pre-1978 buildings are the highest-risk substrate. For any lead-paint renovation work in a pre-1978 home, the contractor must be EPA RRP-certified per 40 CFR 745.

What if I'm sanding materials that might contain asbestos?

Don't. What's the difference between a dust mask and a respirator?

A dust mask (often called a "comfort mask" or "nuisance mask") is not NIOSH-certified and provides minimal filtration — usually just enough to keep visible dust out of the nose and mouth. A respirator is a NIOSH-certified device (42 CFR 84) that filters a specified percentage of airborne particles or vapors: N95 filters 95% of non-oil particulates, N100/P100 filter 99.97%.
