Airlines are finding RamFans a cool way to boost profits. Every minute an airplane is on the ground, it stops making money. One of the reasons planes stay on the ground is the safety regulations regarding brake temperatures. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to stop a plane and that energy translates into high heat. Once the plane lands, the brake systems need time to cool down.
Newer airplanes have integral fans and carbon braking systems, but they can still have heat issues. Older aircraft have metal brake stacks that can build up heat quickly and retain that heat for a significant amount of time. One of the solutions many military and civilian air crews have found to reduce that turn-around time is pretty simple - bring in fans to cool them down.
Boeing recently did some calculations and found that a heavily loaded 787-8 (with 275 out of the 290 person capacity) can, with the aid of augmented ground cooling, get back in the air again in as little as 45 minutes. The reason for the quick departure is that the Euramco Fans help to evenly dissipate the heat. By applying rapidly moving air over the heat-affected areas, the fans can more effectively bring about temperatures in a safe range.
RamFans are a smart choice because they can move an amazing amount of air in a short period of time - as much as 60,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm). The fans can easily be rolled by hand or placed on equipment carts exactly where they are needed. Another benefit of these industrial fans is the fact that they can affect temperature change from a considerable distance - from 8-16 feet away, and even up to 32 feet depending upon the model. Lower-powered fans need to be place much closer - from 4-6 feet away - to be effective. This means ground crews can complete their jobs from a safer distance, and safety is what it's all about.
